Colorado Fly Drive Destination
Grand Lake
We really enjoyed our stay at Grand Lake. Of the two towns to stay at close to
Rocky Mountain National Park, I'd pick Grand Lake at the west entrance of the park over
Estes Park to the east of the park. The town has a less polished, less commercial, more out in the wilds feel to it.
This picture to the left is of one of the board walks along the side of the main steet. Its covered as you can see which was useful because of the short but heavy mountain rain storms we had in August.
A very pleasant surprise was to discover that humming birds are all over the area.
The locals put up feeders with sugar water in them and its entertaining to watch the acrobatics
as the birds compete for prime mid air feeding spots.
The town its self is on the shore of Grand lake surrounded by wooded mountain sides it has one
main street with boardwalks giving it a real western feel.
Up above the town on the way to Rocky Mountain National Park, is Grand
Lake Lodge. This is a must see, if you dont stay there then go up for a meal. The view from the
famous front porch is terrific and the inside has the proportions just right to be small enough
to be welcoming yet big enough to be impressive.
