part 4 Boston and New England

 Day 88 We land in Boston and take to our hotel in this historic city

Days 89 - 90 We have a good look around the sites in Boston. We walk the Black Heritage trail. We walk the Freedom trail and stop to see all the sights, Boston Massacre site, Paul Revere house, Bunker Hill, USS Constitution.

Day 91 We drive down to Plymouth (passing Weymouth and resisting the urge to go to Taunton for some scrumpy) and see the replica Mayflower, the Pilgrim village and Plymouth Rock.

Day 92 We drive on to Provincetown through the Cape Cod National Seashore.

Day 93 We go whale watching cruising by day and moonlight Cape Cod Bay cruising by night in a 100 foot Cape Cod Clipper.

Day 94 We make our way back towards Boston along the coast stopping off at the many historical sights from the original settlement of this area by the Europeans. We visit Quincy to see the Adams family house. This was the home to the 2nd and 6th USA Presidents.



Day 95 After overnighting south of Boston in Weymouth (this is New England), we head north of Boston up the coast to Salem, famed for the Salem Witch trials.

Day 96 - 97 We explore around Salem. We take a trolley tour and we walk the Heritage trail (a red line painted on the sidewalk.. like Boston !!). We visit the Salem wax museum, Witch Dungeon Museum and Salem Witch Museum for "reinactments". Salem also has many ship-owners' homes to visit and we see a few of those to set the period off correctly. The Salem National Historic Site has tours of the Custom House (made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter) plus the Government Warehouse. House of Seven Gables...this is a home that should not be missed (book by Nat Hawthorne).

Day 98 - 99 We set off from Salem for Lexington. We resist the urge to visit Wakefield, Reading, Woburn and Bedford (New England indeed !). At Lexington and Concord we see many revolutionary war sites..colonial houses with bullet holes (jason Russel house), minuteman park (to commemorate April 19, 1775). Concord also has homes of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Orchard house (Louisa May Allcott family home where she wrote Little Women) Quincy Adams National Historic site includes birthplace of John, birthplace of John Quincy.

Day 100 ! 100 days into this journey of a lifetime and there's so much more to see and do. We head West from Concord for Pittsfield and Stockbridge. We take in the culture of the Shaker religion. We visit Amherst where we see the poet Emily Dickensons homestead.

Day 101 In Stockbridge we visit the Norman Rockwell Museum and the fine collection of paintings there.

Day 102 We drive back to Boston and ignore the urge to visit Northampton and Enfield (New England it is !) to take to the air again for the next leg of our epic flydrive.
