Winthrop re invented itself in the early 70's as highway 20 was built to cross the cascades. They re-built the town based on old photographs re-creating the authentic old west main street. This was done to encourage through visitors to pause for a while in the town.
The transformation has been so successful that Winthrop has become a destination in its own right. It has all the attractions of bars, restaurants, museums, shops and places to stay that you would expect in a recreation and holiday destination.
There is a series of events through the year such as Hot air ballon festival, Rhythm and blues and a car festival.
