The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited National Park in America with more than 9 million visitors a year. The reason is simple, they are a magnificent place to visit and they are within a days car drive of one third of the USA population.
Named for the smoky mist that floats in the valleys between the peaks at certain times of day, the park itself straddles the border between Tennessee and North Carolina. It is internationally recognised for the biodiversity within it.
The scenic drive most visitors take is the Newfound Gap Road from Gatlinburg in Tennessee to Cherokee in North Carolina. The road is 33 miles long and will take over an hour to drive none stop because of the steep gradients and twisting road. You will however take much longer than this for you will stop often at the many scenic overlooks.
