Colorado Fly Drive Destination
Ouray
Ouray - Wow !
You have never seen a town in such a majestic setting. The town sits amongst the San Juan Mountains
(part of the Rocky Mountain range) and whichever way you look (normally upwards) the views are
magnificent. We drove into the town not knowing if we would stay in this dot on the map or not, and
stayed for 3 days (as long as our intinerary would allow).
Whilst there we bathed in the municipal geothermal pools at the north of towm, went into the heart of a nearby mountain visiting an old goldmine and had a spectacular walk up a canyon at the southern end of town. Without a doubt, if you find yourself in this part of the world stay in Ouray for a while.
The drive south from Ouray to Silverton is spectacular and rightly famous as the million dollar highway
Site visitor post 4.11.01 There are some spectacular four-wheel drive roads east and
west of Silverton and Ouray, Colorado. There are numerous places in both towns to rent jeeps
and take off on your own and go on a jeep tour and let someone else do the driving. If you
don't have experience and/or lots of nerves, you would probably prefer to have a pro do the
driving. The roads can be quite hairy but the views of the mountains, wildflowers, animals,
rivers and lakes, ghost towns, abandoned mines, etc are beyond description.
If you're really adventurous and have time, energy, and experience, a backpacking trip (on foot
or horseback) east of Silverton and Durango in the Weminuche Wilderness is another suggestion.
