USA travel news

Passeports and children
Here is a very important piece of news for anybody travelling to the USA after October 1st 2003 with children. From October 1st, children will not be allowed to enter the USA if they dont have their own passeport or alternatively a Visa (cost £60). This means that families where one of the parents have their children listed on their own passeport will be turned away at immigration after this date.

United Airlines showing signs of recovery
United Airlines posted a positive cash flow for the first time since filing for bankruptcy protection on Dec. 9 and cleared financial targets set by its lenders for the fourth straight month.

American Airlines making more cuts
American Airlines signalled Tuesday that it is planning to make more, probably painful, cuts in its far-flung operations to reduce expenses and to move closer to becoming profitable again. Read more about it here.

It sems like the SARS scare is over with almost all countries including Toronto and Hong Kong - previous hotspots, being decalred free of new cases of SARS.

USA flight price survey

The following table shows the latest comparison between the three internet companies featured on the site. All prices were obtained from the
search facilities accessed via the website. The quotes are for a return adult fare on 13th August 2003 returning on 20th August 2003 and are inclusive of tax.

When compared with the flight prices for the previous two months you can clearly see the seasonal effect on prices with the total average return fare for June being £399.77, for July being £557.94 and for August being £577.

Ebookers almost swept the board this time for the cheapest flights (highlighted in red). However, the underlying message is still to shop around for the best bargain because the cheapest company for one route is probably not the cheapest company for a different route when you look at all 3 surveys.

Web site facts and figures

I obviously have a keen interest in how many people choose to visit uk-2-usa.com. On the long term view, the trend is steadily upwards. However, over the short term, it does fluctuate wildly from day to day and week to week, often seemingly in tune with what is in the news.

In terms of statistics, the big news this month is that the uk-2-usa website has passed 100,000 page views in late June. I know that in the age of the internet this is not a big number, but from my point of view its unbelievable that over 100,000 times, complete strangers have chosen to view pages I have put together.

June turned out to be the 2nd best month I've ever had for site visitors. I had just under 3,800 visitors to the site. It looked like it would be much better than that after the first two weeks of June, but numbers dropped off sharply at the end of the month. I would expect visitor numbers to drop during the summer months as the planning and researching is over for many and the holidays are starting.

uk-2-usa.com Competition

Back in newsletter 4, I offered a free guidebook to one of the newsletter readers. I received 3 entries so the winner had a 1 in 3 chance of winning, pretty good odds for a free book. However, things are never that easy. The book I had promised was National Parks of the American West by Fodors, a book I have used extensively for my own holiday planning. Unfortunately, despite trawling all of the local bookshops I could not find a copy. Undeterred I went to amazon.com, found the book and ordered it for direct delivery to the winner. After several weeks of waiting I got an e-mail from Amazon saying there had been a delay and it would take another 4-6 weeks, 6 weeks later I got another e-mail saying it would be delalyed again. Therefore, I have cancelled the order, bought an alternative National Parks guidebook, and will despatch it by post to the very patient winner.

I thought it was time for another competition and so rather than go through the above drama again, I have already bought a second book for the prize, DK eyewitness travel guide to Southwest USA & Las Vegas. This book is the prize this time and I can guarantee it will be on its way to the lucky winner at the end of July because I already have it.

Being a Yorkshireman, 'I dont give away owt for nowt' and so you have to give me something in return for a chance to win this book. E-mail me by clicking on the link below and suggest any improvement or adittion you would like to see for the

1) Newsletter
2) Website or
3) Quotation service.

Any one of the three will do. Answering all 3 puts your name in the draw 3 times. Entry into the draw is based on the fact you supplied an answer, not on a qualitative judegment of any suggestions made. I only had three entries last time so the odds could be very good for you to win! All entries must be in by the 24th July and I will then draw the winning name from my flat cap and announce it in Augusts newsletter.

Well, thats it for the edition number 8. I look forwards to receiving comments to help me to develop based on your feedback. I didn't receive any comments following Junes newsletter, does that mean it was perfect ? - I think not, come on and give me your views.
