South Dakota Fly Drive Destination
Mount Rushmore and Keystone
Keystone is not so much of a town, more a collection of places to stay because of its very close
proximity to the main tourist attraction of the region Mount Rushmore.
Having said that, it is a
good place to stay. You can catch a steam train north to Hill City, we took a cable car trip
up a nearby mountain to get a good view of Mount Rushmore, you can get Helicopter trips over
the area, there is a museum all about the carving of Mount Rushmore and there is a gold mine
to visit.
You cant of course come to this area with out visiting Mount Rushmore. It really is a stunning
monument and the faces of the presidents are eerily familiar even to an Englishman.

We had read that you should see the monument after dark and we drove up from Keystone to do so. The drive up in pitch blackness is a little hair raising, but worth it because the faces do look even more spectacular when floodlit.
