DeSmet is the town where the real Laura Ingalls and her family lived. In the USA the books she wrote are very popular. In the UK we are more familiar with the TV series.
You can visit the Surveyor house (which is in the book) by the Shores of Silver lake (the lake is not there anymore). Go see Pa Ingall's house where Ma and Pa and Mary lived after moving to town in their older years. There is a walking tour of buildings Pa helped build, the cemetery where many Ingalls are buried (not Laura, but her boy who died). The 5 cottonwood trees planted by Pa (One for each of his 5 girls) can also be seen.
