Rocky Mountain National Park
Rocky Mountain National Park is a stunner. 415 square miles with 78 named mountain peaks above 12,000 feet. It has one 45 mile long road called trail ridge road that goes through the middle of the park and at its peak elevation of 12,183 feet it is the highest road in the USA. Because of this elevation it is closed to traffic due to snow cover from September ish to May ish. The park has two very pleasant towns to stay in.
Estes Park
on the eastern end of the park road and the much quieter
Grand Lake on the western end.
This picture to the left was taken from the back of the visitor centre near the peak elevation. You can see the snow still there on the north facing slope even in the middle of August when this picture was taken.
Enter from the eastern side and you climb up through meadows, woods and eventually arctic tundra.
Stop to walk around the beaver meadows and pause at the scenic lookouts. When you do reach the
arctic tundra around trail ridge road, stop again at the lookout points and have a walk around.
The altitude is such that its very easy to get out of breath, dont panic its normal to feel a little
light headed.
