Durango is a nice place to visit. We went in summer, but it is also a winter attraction as it nestles in the foothills of the Rockies. The main street retains many of its original old buildings giving the town centre some real character. This is topped off by the southern end of the main street being the southern terminus of the Durango to Silverton Narrow Gauge railway. A real sense of the old west is invoked as the trains steam in and out.

Because of its position, Durango is an excellent centre for exploring this part of the Rockies or for visiting Mesa Verde National Park where the well preserved Anasasi ruins can be seen. Well worth a visit.

Site visitor post 4.11.01 Durango is known for its outdoor sports. If you enjoy fishing, biking, or white water rafting you can check in any of the outdoor sports stores in town for more information. There are great bike trails and you can go for a few miles or a LOT of miles, depending on your interest. There is also a fish hatchery in Durango and it's interesting to take the tour and feed the trout.
